The Global Gaelic Voice Wave Project
A Community Participation Project brought to you by Iora Rua and Cran.
What is TonnadhGuthach?
The name translates as 'VoiceWave'. It's an asynchronous choir project. A what? A synchro-whatsis? Imagine a song recording with a choir of a thousand voices (or more) all singing the chorus together... but none of them were in the recording studio at the same time. In fact, all of the singers live on different continents, let alone in different time-zones! What unites all the participants is their love of singing in Irish (Gaeilge).
How to participate?
It's easy as 1-2-3!
1 DOWNLOAD the track from www.cranmusic.com
2 LISTEN & RECORD Practice singing with the guys from Cran before you record
3 EMAIL us your version of you singing along
What song are we singing?
'Óró Mhíle Grá' - Track 11 on the CD 'Music From The Edge Of The World' (BRRCD004).
Some background details: "This is a bobaró (trickster, mischief) song, often sung by groups of people as they work or to while away the time. Each verse has an improvised line in which the singer will poke fun at another member of the community who must then improvise a witty retort or an even more outrageous insult.
CRAN sometimes (but not always) bring this song out on stage where we tease the people of a particular country or area – good clean fun..."
We just want you to sing the 'Óró mhíle grá' bits! For example:
YOU! - Óró mhíle grá, is óró mhíle grá THEM! - Seo mo bhobaró le do bhoderó go n-éiri an lá bán, YOU AGAIN! - S' óró mhíle, óró mhíle, óró mhíle grá
Who is Cran?
CRAN are a 3-man Irish folk-music group with a highly individualistic approach to their music and an amazing range of style and repertoire. They have VERY kindly offered the use of their recording of this song for this project, for which we thank them enormously.

Technical Tips
What you need:
- Internet access (we know, it seems a bit obvious - but hey... oh, and a valid email account too)
- Microphone (if you have your own recording studio, well, good luck to you, otherwise some kind of USB device will do)
- Sound-recording software (we recommend you use Audacity, mainly because it's freeware and very usable)
- Headphones (we need to hear YOU singing, not the original recording in the background)
- Ensure that there is as little background noise as possible. Put the kids to bed first (if they don't take part), and if a huge bus goes past as you record, do it again.
Save your recording as an .mp3 file, and email it to us at
