World Irish examines regional-specific vocabulary, cultural items and slang words and attempts to find their Irish equivalent.

The origins of this idea stem from a project started by two Australian Gaeilgeorí, Colin Ryan and Val Noone. Their intention was to find translations for words specific to Australia.

Under World Irish, we will explore vocabulary which has crept its way into the English, but for which there are currently no translations in the Irish, for example Hot Dog. This is a cultural term which would force a fluent speaker to switch to English to communicate the idea.

This section invites your participation. Your ideas and suggestions are most welcome. You need to be a registered member of Iora Rua in order to post. Please keep a friendly tone. It's a linguistic experiment. We want to collate ideas and words that you have come across, as well as invite your suggestions of translations.

Discussion Forum - Discuss and Contribute

NOTE: Due to excessive spamming we had to close down the Discussion forum. We received up to 10 bogus "members" every day,  odious, slimy spammers who signed up with their sole intention to drive visitors to their dubious sites. Unfortunately, we at Iora Rua are only a couple of people to look after the site, trying to provide quality content to people with an interest in learning Irish. We have been spending more time flushing out member databases and getting rid of the virtual stench that this particular faceless, shameless and unscrupulous 'clientele' left behind than improving the site with what little time we can afford to dedicate to this!

We are planning to review the 'situation' and returning soon with a different discussion forum software (which may hopefully attract real people rather than the assorted lowlives we had to deal with lately, if just in their username and provided detail).
